CIPPEC at the T20 Summit in Berlin

The Center for the Implementation of Public Policies Promoting Equity and Growth (CIPPEC as per its acronym in Spanish) participated in the summit of the Think20(T20) – a think tanks network advising the G20 on public policy issues – in Berlin, Germany.

‘In an era of fake news, the role of think tanks becomes even more relevant and pressing; we must be able to translate the impact of our work into better public policies’ said Julia Pomares, Executive Director of CIPPEC, a T20 member institution. In this regard, Pomares added that ‘monitoring the progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a clear roadmap to do so’.

In addition to Pomares, the summit was also attended by two other representatives of CIPPEC: Mercedes Méndez Ribas, Institutional Development Director, and Martín Rapetti, Economic Development Program Director.

The event brought together academia and management experts, including three Nobel Prizes in Economics: Edmund Phelps, Michael Spence and George Akerlof.

Ahead of each G20 presidential summit, the T20 member think tanks analyze the main global policy issues and formulate specific recommendations for consideration at the meeting of heads of state, which this year will be held on 7th & 8th July in Hamburg. The proposals are intended to be translated into public policy.

Following its participation in the summit, CIPPEC will work to promote locally the agenda agreed by the think tanks network, as a prelude of Argentina’s G20 presidency next year.

The T20 Summit Agenda

This T20 Summit focused on several G20 topics, including how to achieve inclusive growth; the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals; the digital economy; the future of the global trading system; international cooperation in tax matters; migratory agreements; social justice in times of political and economic polarization; and evidence-based policy formulation, among others.

The summit was presided over by Dennis Snower, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW as per the acronym in German) and by Dirk Messner, Director of the German Development Institute (DIE), which co-chair the T20 during Germany’s G20 presidency.
