CIPPEC moderated a political debate during the Council of the Americas

Julia Pomares chaired a debate between Congressman Luciano Laspina and Senators Juan Manuel Abal Medina and Rodolfo Urtubey during the Conference of the Council of the Americas.

Last Thursday, Julia Pomares, CIPPEC’s Executive Director, moderated a debate between Congressman Luciano Laspina and Senators Juan Manuel Abal Medina and Rodolfo Urtubey during the 14th Annual Conference of the Council of the Americas held in the City of Buenos Aires.

‘Many of the issues discussed this morning, such as the tax reform Minister Dujovne said the Executive Power will refer to Congress before the end of the year, as well as most structural issues of Argentina, are decided upon in Congress. That’s why we thought it was crucial to encourage dialogue with the protagonists’ pointed out the Executive Director of CIPPEC.

The participation of CIPPEC’s Executive Director in the Council of the Americas is part of the public awareness campaign called ‘Lo que falta #EnElCongresoEsPosible’ (‘What the country is lacking, #CongressCanDeliver’) launched by the applied social research center. Ahead of the upcoming elections in October, the purpose of the initiative is to engage candidates and opinion leaders in debates on seven specific public policy proposals that need to be discussed by Congress.

With regard to economic issues, following Pomares’s remarks, Laspina, Abal Medina and Urtubey expressed their opinions on what they thought should be included in the tax reform. And in connection to Argentina’s social problems, they also discussed what policies should be pursued to end child poverty.

The conference, co-hosted by the Council of the Americas and the Argentine Chamber of Commerce, brought together key public officials, lawmakers and businessmen to discuss the economic and political future of Argentina.
